Alpinist Photography is an online portfolio of the work of Rob Sutherland, with the main focus being on Landscape and Travel photography... although with occasional deviations!
Rob discovered photography whilst at school in a remote corner of Cumbria after being inspired by his geography teacher, Jim Fisher, whose images recorded adventures that fed the imagination. Shortly after becoming interested in the medium he obtained an old Fuji SLR which barely worked, but the seed was sown. Since this time technology has not ceased it's onward march and the switch to digital was made in early 2006.
Rob is now based in Doune near Stirling, a convenient location to explore Scotland thoroughly being both geographically and communicatively roughly in the centre of the country. The main A9 north/south route gives easy access to |
the central and eastern highlands and far north, as well as opening up access to the Scottish Borders. The town is also blessed with the East/West routes formed by the A84 through the Trossachs and onto Fort William and the West of Scotland on the one hand, and the A91 that takes the traveler into the Kingdom of Fife to the East. There is also convenient access to the international airports at both Edinburgh and Glasgow. It is a landscapers and travelers dream!
Outside of taking photographs Rob installs and maintains sewage pumping and treatment plants, and has completed an MSc in Environmental Architecture at the Centre for Alternative Technologies in Wales, which will add another qualification to the growing list that includes a BSc in Archaeology from the University of Glasgow, and an MSc in IT from the University of Liverpool. Prior to this his career has been an IT Manager, Archaeologist, Anthropologist, trainee Zoologist, Film Extra and almost made it as a Rock Star.
Whilst not working or studying Rob can usually be found in the hills, either mountain biking, walking or mountaineering - and more often than not with a camera attached to his person.
Rob's work has been published in Singletrack Magazine, a couple of Zoological papers, and several web sites, including: singletrackworld.com; outdoorsmagic.com; photographymonthly.com. He is also a regular contributor to the Travel Photographers Network and sells images via Alamy. |
