Embattled by Lost Causes

07th April 2015
Today's photograph seems very appropriate. I feel like I am trapped, dug in and surrounded by the fog of war... no where left to go... and at the end of the road. My last throw of the dice has been made and now, with the bitter taste of disappointment, the end of a journey has come.

These old Pill Boxes are unloved by many, and almost entirely uncelebrated. This one stands forlorn on the hillside above High Newton in the South Lakes, but it is a highly evocative spot. Whilst the weather played on my own situation, it also made the composition far more stark than it usually is which appealed to me a lot and finally gave me a chance to capture this mostly forgotten relic of a savage age in a way that befitted it.

Someday these monuments will be, I am sure, celebrated for the part of a story they tell. That time is not now, but I don't think it will be long before we start to really explore the history and archaeology of this most turbulent period of the European story.

On the upside... my old knee injury that has been causing problems the last few days seems to have cleared up! Big day of work lined up for tomorrow which should help free up some time to start training again from Thursday!
