More Positive!

26th November 2016
Having got the mountain bike running properly... finally... I decided that my very embarrassing first ride attempt mentioned a few days ago was not going to define my recovery! I already had an idea to set myself the challenge of climbing up out of the village by the steep road, or attempting to, and using this as a gauge of my fitness as it recovered.

The first goal would be to make it to the top of the hill. It's not that long, about 270m horizontal, and not really that high at about 50m total climb. But that means it is pretty steep! I hadn't really intended to try it this week, my plan was simply to ride over the bridge and turn left until I reached the Monkey Puzzle and then ride back, about a half mile in total. I saw the big hill though and wondered... could I make it to the half way(ish) point where the bridleway drops off to the left? That would give me a tiny bit of offroad, be more of a challenge and be all in all a bit more meaningful.

Off I went.

Unfortunately a lass walking her dog up the bridleway was watching me struggle and made a nice comment as I met her, I wasn't quite at the point of death so I carried on wondering how much further I could go.

I did stop.

At the top!

From the top the road follows the ridgeline of the hill before breaking off onto a bridleway back to Steep Hill (or Colton Hill as it is probably better known), which was a muddy and boggy mess. Then down the track I had planned to Monkey Puzzle and home. 2 hard miles in my current state, but way more than I imagined I would have done between recovering from surgery and nursing a torn back muscle.

Now I have something to build on!

After a difficult, depressing and often painful 2016 I am ready for a much better year. I am really hoping we are going to get one!
