New Arrivals!

06th August 2013
The new arrival - an Olympus OM-D.

When I was just learning photography there were two cameras that I sometimes got to use, and loved dearly, an OM2 and an OM10. I had planned on getting the OM10 someday when I could afford one, but pre-digital they were always just out of my reach (and the OM2 was a long way out of my reach) so I was pretty excited when I saw the OM-D.

It was also very expensive when it came out, but the price has come down dramatically (there is probably a new one on the way next month) then there was a rebate offer, plus a battery grip offer, so I decided now was the time. I need something smaller, lighter and less expensive - but still robust - for mountain biking, motorbiking and taking on adventures with the boys. A kind of adventure-travel camera if you will. This is it! A lot smaller, a lot lighter and yet still with enough image quality to fulfil my needs.

Really looking forward to working it in anger now!

The eventual plan is to have a very, very small set up comprising three or four lenses, a couple of remote flashes, a remote release and that is about it. Small enough to carry in a bum bag basically. Given that the whole rig will cost less than a single lens from the Nikon set up this is going to be a very cost effective second system!

This shows the size difference - the OM-D has a zoom on it, the D800E has a 50mm prime on!

The plan is to run the OM-D with a 14mm Pancake, 45mm f1.8 portrait lens and, eventually, a 60mm macro (the most expensive lens I am after, but half the price of the one I would need on the Nikon!)
