The Nikon D800E: Day Two

19th May 2012
Finally, time to actually take the camera out and take some photographs! The weather, however, has been uncooperative I have to say with flat grey sky and very little in the way of contrast. Undeterred I took Jake out for a walk around "The Gill" in Ulverston this morning to see how the camera handled in use.

One word.

As I mentioned yesterday, everything is pretty much exactly where you want it to be, and I have got used to the slightly darker viewfinder rapidly - and that slight darkness is massively outweighed by the function.

Things I am slightly in love with from today:

  • The viewfinder grid which can be turned on and off, so useful and without the cost and hassle of buying and fitting a separate focus screen as I had with the 5D II, plus I get to turn it on and off at will!

  • The viewfinder inbuilt "virtual horizon". I mentioned this yesterday, but today I really "got it" a whole lot more, so it gets a second mention!

  • The camera's speed and responsiveness. Everything just snaps to - this camera is sharp and not just in terms of image quality!

  • The dynamic range - I am pulling tones out of the shadows that would usually be a mess of noise with absolute ease. I just can't get over it... wish I had this set up on some of the earlier landscape shoots!

There are no negatives to speak of today, still a learning process! Whilst I have taken some photographs today I haven't really done anything hugely demanding, they are little more than snap shots! I am hoping as this week goes on I may get the chance to start pushing myself and the camera a little harder!
